Description

After a long wait I’m happy to finally be able to post this. This is one of the illustrations I made for the new Green Ronin book, Freeport: The City of Adventure for the Pathfinder RPG. The book has been in development for quite a while following their very successful Kickstarter campaign.

Captain Slice's favorite part of docking was the Taverns. Having been born at sea she found it hard to stomach the stagnant land. It seemed unnatural. It was dead and unmoving. The sea was safe, it was home. It was like being rocked slowly to bed as a baby.

That might have been why Slice always wanted a strong drink when she was on land: enough drink and it felt like she was at sea again.

So when she got up from her seat to use the bathroom, she was good and drunk. And when she returned, to her dismay, she found one of the hideous goat creatures; the ones who lived among the rolling hills on the island, had stolen her seat.

"That's my seat." she said drunkenly to the goat.

"No..mine." the goanman bleeted.

It would have been easy to just find another seat but when you're captain of a pirate ship, showing any weakness could mean doom.

"Give me my seat back!" Slice said bellowed with conviction as she drew her twin blades, expertly crafted by a master smith.

"No!" bellowed the goatman as he hunched and cowered, holding his badly damaged axe in the air in front of him. "My seat!" For whatever reason the goatman was unwilling to give the seat back.

Slice lunged forward slicing the goatman's arm. His thick skin prevented most of the damage but he still bellowed in pain. The goatman moved forward threateningly but still held his weapon in front of him protectively. He was obviously not a fighter. Slice took the opportunity to cut him again. The creature screamed in pain once again. "My seat!" he bellowed definitely.

Slice sighed, she did not want to murder the goat over a seat but if he didn't relinquish the spot she'd have no choice. She'd already gone too far to turn back.

She dashed to the right with her blades at her sides then suddenly turned left, she suddenly swung the blades upwards and down, slicing into each of the goat's shoulders and with several swift movements sliced the goat three move times, the creature screaming all the while.

He backed away from the pirate whimpering. "No! Please! My seat!" he pleaded, his eyes wide with fear.

Slice was disgusted, he was still protecting the chair despite his terror. He was too pathetic for her to keep on the attack.

The moments hesitation was enough time for her to gain more self awareness. She turned to see the tavern's patrons hiding in the background. The barkeep was hiding behind a pillar. Slice sighed. "Fine, keep the fucking chair."

She cursed herself for causing a scene again as she found a new table. The patrons moved quickly to give her a wide berth.

The goatman sat in his chair shaking back and forth whimpering. At least Slice had done enough posturing to keep the crew's respect.
